How to set your primary monitor in Windows

Your primary monitor is the one with the taskbar and Start menu, and where most new windows open. If they're showing up on the wrong screen, here's how to move them.

Set the primary display (Windows 11)

1. Right-click the desktop and choose Display settings (or go to Settings → System → Display).
2. At the top you'll see numbered boxes for each screen. Click the box for the monitor you want as your main one. If you're not sure which is which, click Identify and a big number appears on each screen.
3. Scroll down, expand Multiple displays, and tick Make this my main display.

The taskbar and Start menu jump to that screen straight away.

Set the primary display (Windows 10)

1. Right-click the desktop → Display settings.
2. Click the numbered box for the monitor you want as primary.
3. Scroll to Multiple displays and tick Make this my main display.

Why it keeps changing back

Windows ties the "main display" choice to that exact monitor and connection. Plug into a different dock or desk and it has no idea which screen should be primary, so it guesses, often the laptop's own screen, or the wrong external. That's why hot-deskers set it every single morning.
