Windows won't remember my monitor layout?

You set your monitors up just how you like them, then you undock, come back, and Windows has shuffled everything again. Here's why it happens and how to stop fighting it.

Why Windows keeps forgetting

Windows stores a monitor arrangement against the exact set of displays it sees, identified by each one's connection and hardware ID. That sounds sensible until you hot-desk. Plug into a different dock, a different monitor, or even the same monitors on a different port, and Windows treats it as a brand-new setup with no saved arrangement, so it falls back to a default: screens in the wrong order, the wrong one set as primary, or everything mirrored.

It gets worse with docking stations and DisplayLink, where monitors can come up in a different order each time depending on which display initialises first. So even at the same desk, your layout can land differently from one morning to the next.

The "fixes" that don't stick

• Rearranging in Display settings every time. It works until the next dock, then you're back in the menu dragging boxes around.
• "Multiple displays" → remember on this display. Tied to that exact hardware, so it forgets the moment anything changes.
• Registry and GPU-vendor profiles. Fiddly to set up, brittle when the hardware changes, and not something you'd roll out across a team.
• Docking software presets. Assumes the same dock and monitors every time, which is exactly what hot-desking isn't.

The common thread: they all try to match a saved layout to specific hardware. At a hot desk, the hardware keeps changing, so the match keeps failing.

The fix: describe the layout, don't save it
