DisplayLink dock monitor order keeps changing?

You sit down, plug into the same dock as yesterday, and your monitors come up in a different order, again. If you're on a DisplayLink or USB-C dock, this is a known headache. Here's why, and how to stop chasing it.

Why DisplayLink docks reorder your screens

DisplayLink drives each monitor over USB rather than a direct GPU cable, and the screens get initialised one after another as the dock powers up. Whichever display wakes up first tends to become "1". That start-up order isn't guaranteed, it can vary with cable, power, monitor model and timing, so the same two monitors can come up as 1-2 one morning and 2-1 the next. USB-C docks that carry video (DP Alt Mode) can do the same thing.

What's worth trying

• Update the DisplayLink driver from the manufacturer, older versions handle multi-monitor ordering worse.
• Keep the same physical port order, always plug monitor A into the same dock port, monitor B into the same one. It helps, but doesn't guarantee consistent numbering.
• Rearrange in Display settings (drag the numbered boxes, Apply). Fixes this session; often undone by the next reconnect.

The reason none of these fully stick: Windows saves a layout for a specific set and order of displays, and DisplayLink keeps changing the order out from under it.

Stop fighting the order
